A prototype of the Academy

On Saturday history was made when the executive governor of Rivers state Nyesom Wike in the company of his Oyo state counterparts and real Madrid football club officials launched the real Madrid Football Academy in Port Harcourt.

Wike who was full of joy for bringing his vision of setting up a football academy to fruition waive the payment of tuition fee for indigenes of the state who are admitted in the academy.

According to the governor since the academy was constructed with Rivers state taxpayers money it is fair and right that indigenes of the state received special preference.

The unveiling of the standard football academy was witnessed by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State who also unveiled the ultra-modern football training facility. Also present at the occasion were representatives of Real Madrid football club of Spain as well as top officials of Rivers state government.

Makinde while commending the rivers state government for the great vision said the academy will surely groom the next generation of stars. He also said the academy will allow the early discovery and harnessing of football talents in Rivers state.

“There has always been great football talents from rivers great players like Taribo WSest, George West, George Finidi and Joseph Yobo. This project will create more starts,” the Oyo governor said.

Governor Wike in his address said the unveiling of the real Madrid Academy was one of the happiest events of his life, as it marked the beginning of a new football era.

“Today is one of the happiest days of my life. Today our dream has come to fruition by the help of God,” he said.

According to Wike, 70 percent of the students of the Academy would be from Rivers, while other Nigerians would form 30 percent of the school’s intake. The governor further discloses that a school and a hostel will be constructed in the academy as additional facilities.

Also commenting, the Area Manager of Real Madrid Foundation for Africa and the Middle East, Inigo Vallejo pledged Real Madrid commitment towards supporting the academy’s development.

He assured that the European giant has keyed into the project and will enable it to succeed.

Vallejo thanked Governor Wike for his commitment to football development assuring that Real Madrid football club would provide the necessary technical support to develop the academy.
