Mikel Obi, the retiring Super Eagles captain has penned a new deal with a top Turkish club side Trabzonspor Football Club in Turkey. The contract is reported to be worth about 1.5million Euros (N607million Naira) per session.
The 32-year oil Super Eagles midfielder who has won one nations cup for Nigeria joined the Turkish side this summer in a deal that will earn him over 150,000 Euros a week.
With this deal, Mikel stands out as the highest-earning Nigerian football star in Turkey. He is also said to be entitled to bonuses and other incentives worth several thousand Euros as contained in the deal.
He is said to have penned down a contract for two years with an option for an additional 12 months.
Commenting on the deal a sports commentator, who is privy to the deal commended Mikel for securing such a lucrative deal despite his age which is put at 32 years. The commentator said it was a very good deal when considered that Mikel was at the twilight of his football career.
It is observed that Mikel was able to cling the lucrative contract despite his age because of his wealth of experience, exposure, discipline on and off the pitch as well as his pedigree.
The Super Eagles captain is expected to link up with his fellow Super Eagles compatriots being Ogenyi Onazi and Anthony Nwakaeme at Trabzonspor football club. The club is expected to compete in next season’s Europa League after finishing fourth in the Turkish league.
Mikel who is widely associated with the legendary Chelsea football club of London is reported to have made 249 Premier League appearances for Chelsa in an 11 year –year spell. During this period he has won two league titles. Three FA Cups, the UEFA Champions League and the Europa League.
In the national team assignments, Mikel has featured for Nigerian national team the Super Eagles in two world cups and helped the Super Eagles win the 2013 African Cup of Nations.
