A recent ranking of top 100 Nigerian universities by the Spanish based Conselo Superior De Investigations Cientificas reveals very low standings of Niger Delta Universities and polytechnics among the best 100.

Starting with the first top 10 Nigerian Universities and Polytechnics, the University of Ibadan came up tops as the nation best university followed by Covenant University, Ota. The tenth position is occupied by the Federal University of technology, Owerri, Imo state.

The only Niger delta based university among the top 10 best universities is the University of Port Harcourt who occupies the 6th position in the log.

Scrolling down the ladder from the 11thposition, Niger delta based universities occur intermittently  in the list. For example between the 11th and the 20th position, only two Niger delta based universities are found within this bracket. The University of Benin, comes in the 13th position, while the University of Uyo occupies the 19th position.

Between the 21st and the 50th spots, the University of Calabar, sits in the 21st position, the Rivers State University of Science and Technology occupies the 28th position while the Niger Delta University occupies the 35th position.

Auchi Polythecnic, Auchi in Edo State is the highest ranked Niger delta based polytechnic at No. 38th , while Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State is in the 44th position.

The later part of the best 100 Nigerian Universities and Polytechnic list, from 51st to 100th spots has Edo State Polytechnic, Usen, Edo State at No 54. Delta State University, Abraka at No. 55.The Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun, Delta State at No. 62.

Cross River State University of Science and Technology, Calabar at No.63, While the Federal University Otuoke, Bayelsa State is No. 72 on the list.

Igbinedion University, Okada is No. 74 while the Akwa Ibom State University of Science and Technology is No.75.

The Benson Idahosa University, Edo State occupies No. 80, while the Petroleum Training Institute, Effurun at No. 86 round up the best 100 Universities and Polytechnics based in the Niger delta region.

A look at the list showed that only 16 schools based in the region made it in the best 100 schools with University of Port Harcourt as the best at No.6 while the Petroleum Training Institute is the least ranked schools among the Niger Delta schools within the best 100 bracket.

Over 5o Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education mostly privately owned that are located in the Niger delta region are not rank within the best 100 higher institutions in Nigeria. The result of these is sad and disheartening.

It is noteworthy that this ranking has exposed the Low standards and inferior education these schools are imparting on its students. It is therefore important that the various educational watch dog especially the National Universities Commission and   the regulatory boards of Polytechnics and Colleges of Education pay closer attention to what these institutions of higher learning are offering its students.
