The Comatose Rivers State which almost became moribund and abandoned id seeing a lease of life as economic activities have picked up in the old eastern premier port.

It would be recalled that the Rivers Port have experienced lowbusiness activities despite the clamour by stakeholders in the Niger Deltaregion for the government to put it to greater use by diverting some cargoesfrom the congested Lagos ports to it.

One of the reasons for the change in fortune of the port is said to be an improved security network at the Rivers Port Complex, Port Harcourt as there has been a tremendous improvement in the rate of container traffic to the complex.

This is as importers and exporters now patronise the port for the conveyance of goods and cargoes to and from the country.

Investigations by our correspondent revealed that no fewer than 30trucks leave the complex on daily basis, carrying various types of goods andcargoes to the Eastern states.

Also, more sea vessels now berth at the complex with various kindsof cargoes ranging from bulk to raw materials.

It would be recalled that last month, Rivers Port exportedthousands of bags of Soya Bean meal to Europe through a shipping agent, OceanGlory, making the port a destination for exports in the region.

Also of note is the activities of the two terminal operators inthe complex, Port Terminal Operations Limited (PTOL) and BUA TerminalOperations, which handle different types of imports and exports, includingimportation of vehicles to the country.

There is now long traffic of trucks and heavy-duty trailers waiting to convey and discharge cargoes and goods at the premier port, just as drivers make brisk business.

It is also suggesteion by operators of the facility that the increased use of the Port might not be unconnected to some reforms initiated by the Port Manager, Engr. Yunusa Ibrahim Anji since assuming office.
