Niger Delta Militants
It is being unraveled that some of the kidnappings and banditry that is being perpetuated in the southern parts of Nigeria especially within the riverine communities might not all be the handiwork of Fulani herdsmen after all.
This thinking is coming after the release of the abducted son of the Chief Imam of Ode-Omi, Absulazeez Sanni who was abducted last Sunday but thankfully was freed along with two other by his abductors.
Sanni while relating his sad experience along with with two others victims Adams Bamidele an accountant and Jelili Adams, a tailor, revealed that their abductors were Ijaw men from the Niger Delta and not Fulani Herdsmen’s as widely believed.
Describing his experience in the hands of his abductors as pathetic Sanni said they were mean and callous and careless whether they were alive or dying. Their abductors according to him surprisingly did not speak Fulani nor Hausa but spoke Ijaw and were certainly Ijaws from the Niger Delta.
He recalled that they were abducted on the eve of the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations at Ode-Omi, a boundary community between Lagos and Ogun state waterside.
Fulani Herdsmen on a Mission
According to him “We were preparing for the Ileya festival, unfortunately, some gunmen came into the house and started shooting until I was kidnapped. So since that Sunday, I was in the creeks with the kidnappers.
“I had been in their den since Sunday until I was released today. We were fed with what I can call “feselu” in Ijebuland: a mixture of water and garri not properly cooked.
“I don’t understand their language, but from what they are saying, they should be from the Niger Delta. They are Ijaw people” Sanni denied paying any ransom to secure his release. “We did not pay a ransom. They threatened us but we thank God and Ogun State Government for the swift response. They demanded N50 million but thank God we are saved”
The Ogun State Police Commissioner Bashir Makama confirmed the arrest of one suspect in connection with the kidnapping stating that a pistol was recovered in the process. Police revealed the effort made in tracking down the suspects and rescuing the victims and promised to round up the other kidnappers who are on the run.
