It is widely reported that the Nigerian President Muhammadu  Buhari has given approval for the commencement of work on the coastal rail projects linking some Niger Delta region and Lagos state. The rail line projects are specifically designed to link the ports of Calabar with that of Port Harcourt passing through Uyo in Akwa Ibom State.

Unconfirmed sources disclosed that the Nigerian President gave the nod through the Minister of Transport Mr. Rotimi Amaechi . The dual gauge rail estimated to cost N 485 Billion will be completed within 48 months.


It was disclosed that the Nigerian government has already paid her counterpart funding and that the Chinese government will in a couple of weeks commit themselves to the completion of the project by paying their own counterpart funds.

It will be recall that last year the Nigerian Federal Government represented by the Minister of Transport Rotimi Amaechi signed a revised contract for the construction of the double gauge rail lines from Lagos to Kano and from Port Harcourt to Calabar at the cost of $11.117 billion.

It is also recall that this contract was first conceived and awarded in the Goodluck Jonathan administration but the contract sum was revised from the earlier agreed contract sum of $11.917 billion to the present sum thereby saving Nigeria the sum of $800 million.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has commended the Nigerian President for approving the multi-billion dollar rail project linking Lagos with the Niger Delta describing the feat as a sincere effort towards the development of the area.

A statement signed by the state chapter chairman, Dr Davies Ibiamu Ikanya the party commended the Minister of Transport Rt Hon Rotimi Amaechi for being the catalyst that enable the approval of the contract.

The APC Chairman advised the Niger Delta youths to reciprocate the genuine intentions of the Nigerian President and eschew violence so that progress and development can be actualized in the Niger delta.

He therefore implored the Chinese Construction Company saddled with the job to mobilize to site and commence work on the rail line projects so that the many doubting persons in the region will be convince that the  rail project is a reality and not a fluke.
