Effects of Fire Disaster

The national Oil Detection and Remediation Agency NOSDRA has given a damning verdict on the unfortunate Pipeline explosion that rocked the Komkom community of Rivers state.

The Federal Government agency claimed in its reports on the incident that it was man-made and it is suspected to have been caused by oil and pipeline vandals.

Mr. Cyrus Nkanwang head of NOSDRA in Port Harcourt made the startling revelation while speaking on the outcome of the report initiated by NOSDRA in Port Harcourt.

According to Nkanwang, the joint investigation visit to the site by officials of the agency and oil companies revealed that the spill was extensive. He further disclosed that the spill affected over 20 hectares of land and destroyed farmlands and rivers.

Casualty of Pipeline Explosion

Nkanwang said, “We gathered that when the pipeline started leaking oil people rushed to the scene and started scooping. Some sources in the community told us that the fire was ignited after a police officer shot around the scene. They said the police was trying to scare the people away and immediately he release his bullet the fire sparked.

“The second source said that somebody was holding a phone and as his phone rang it sparked the fire. However, most of the security reports show that the fire started after the gunshot.

“We discovered that the area was filled with dead bodies and other organisms that died in the process. So we have ordered for immediate remediation of the land to enable the restoration of proper living in the area,” Nkanwang said.

It would be recalled that many people were reported killed when a pipeline belonging to the Pipeline and Product Marketing Company PPMC exploded last month in KOM-KOM in Oyinbo Council area of Rivers state.

The incident had pitted the communities hosting the pipeline against the operator of the facility. The communities had blamed the incident on the lack of maintenance of the pipeline whilst the oil company PPMC had blamed the incident on pipeline vandals.
