Ibom Air Takes Off
Congratulatory messages and kudos have continued to pour onto the governor and government of Akwa Ibom State for the successful commencement of the maiden flight of Ibom Air from the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo.
It would be recalled that last Friday the commercial airline owned and sponsored by the Akwa Ibom State commenced full-scale commercial flights with the taking off of a Bombardier CRJ 900 Series registered plane from the Uyo Airport to the Murtala Mohammed Airport in Lagos.
A second flight was to follow soon thirty minutes later this time an inaugural flight to the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in Abuja.
The commencement of flights by the airline was a big relief by the state government who has lately been under attacked by the opposition who view the airline launching early this year as merely political stunts to win votes in the just concluded gubernatorial elections.
The maiden flights out of Uyo was witnessed by an excited crowd of indigenes led by the state deputy governor Mr. Moses Ekpo who represented the state governor Udom Emmanuel.
The roaring sound of the first flight to Lagos was mixed with a loud shout of joy, satisfaction and pride by the crowd who were joyful to witness the epoch event.

According to the state governor Udom Emmanuel, “Today’s occasion is a watershed moment for us as a people. Never in the history of this nation or indeed anywhere else in Africa that you can recall has a state government gone into airline operations.
Akwa Ibom state is, therefore, the first to achieve this, and we should all collectively give ourselves a pat on the back”
Giving the reason for the establishment of the airline, the governor insisted that it will bring about rapid industrialisation of the state.
“Investors will continue to flock into our state, given the ease of traveling the launch of this airline will engender, the peace we enjoy and the hospitality of our people. We are all winners in this” stressed the governor.
The governor used the occasion of the launch to condemned attacks on his person and the airline project by the opposition in the state saying citizens of the state should be responsible and patriotic instead of being detractors.
According to the governor” We should learn to separate development from politics. It is not everything about us that should be coloured by, or be seen through the prism of politics.”
“Ibom Air is a huge achievement for us all. When we board these aircraft to either Lagos or Abuja and back to Uyo, the cabin crew will not ask you whether you are a PDP or APC card-carrying member, rather you will be greeted and be told “welcome on board” as a proud son or daughter of Akwa Ibom State” Udom emphasised.
