Armed Herdsmen Arrested by Youths in Delta.

Umuachi –Afor axis of the Asaba –Ughelli road was under siege by herdsmen for one hour over the weekend. Information gathered from motorist plying the busy road revealed that the rampaging herdsmen were well armed with AK 47 rifle and cutlasses as they molested and robbed innocent drivers and passengers along the route.

Many drivers who claimed to have witnessed the sad incident said more than 5 persons mostly passengers were injured in the said attack as a result of gunshot wounds they received when the herdsmen were shooting indiscriminately. The herdsmen were said to have emerged from a nearby bush and started shooting sporadically while brandishing their cutlasses on the coal tar as they pounced on an unsuspecting motorist that was passing by.

Some of the unfortunate passengers who were hit by bullet wounds as the crazy herdsmen shot sporadically at approaching vehicles were rushed to nearby hospitals either in Ughelli or at Asaba depending on which side of the road the victim’s vehicle was coming from.

Herdsmen Under Custody in Delta State

Locals milling around the Umuachi-Afor axis where the incident occurred said the herdsmen struck around 6.30 p.m. with guns which they use freely against incoming motorists thereby hitting 5 passengers with stray bullets.

The herdsmen were said to have operated at will for more than 30 minutes without any resistance forcing incoming motorist coming from Asaba to seek refuge at Umuachi – Ogo community while motorist coming from Ughelli diverted to kwale and other surrounding towns.

The police and soldiers are said to have arrived the scene thirty-five minute into the mayhem created by the rancourous herdsmen who were not shy to immediately engage the security operatives with gunfire and threats of undertaking a full-scale war. However, they were to retreat and escaped later into the bush when the military firearms were gaining more power than their old rustic AK 47.

Speaking on the incident, the State Police Command Public Relations Officer Mr. Andrew Aniamaka confirmed the incident while colouring it as an armed robbery incident executed by armed herdsmen. The police stated that armed herdsmen carried out an attack on the expressway causing the major road to be deserted. In the process, travelers were attacked with guns and two of the injured victims are currently receiving treatment in the hospital.

The police spokesman however assured the residents of the area that the hoodlums who carried out the attack will not go unpunished as the police formations are currently on their trail and it is only a matter of time before they would be apprehended.
