An appeal has been made by the executive governor of Rivers state Nyesom Wike to the British government to partner with the state to combat crime that is threatening and affecting the socio-economic development and peace in the state.
Gov Wike made the plea specifically for help to develop the state Neighbourhood safety Corps Agency in order to make it effective and relevant in containing various criminal activities in the state.
He disclosed that there is an urgent need for the agency to be funded, trained and equipped in handling security information in partnership with other securities agencies in the state.
The Governor made the call for support while receiving the United Kingdom Department for International Development Team in the Niger Delta on Friday at the Brick’s house in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital.
The area of support desired by the state according to Wike is in the area of training and equipping of the state’s neighbourhood safety personnel.
According to Wike ”Virtually all states in Nigeria have security challenges. We have established the Neighbourhood Safety Corps Agency to help the security agencies with critical information to fight crime.
”Such information will help the security agencies nip crimes in the bud. We need assistance for the provision of necessary security training aids for operatives of the Neighbourhood Safety Corps Agency”.
Apart from security, Governor Wike also canvassed co-operation and support in the area of Agricultural Development.
He said: “One of the key areas of priority is agriculture. We want to partner with you to develop all forms of agriculture.
“This is necessary because we are interested in using agriculture to create employment for our youths. In this sector, we are looking at crop farming, fishing, and poultry.”
