Wike Presenting Keys of one of the Jeeps.
Elected members of the National Assembly from Rivers State are smiling home courtesy of their state governor Nyesom Wike who recently presented them with keys to brand new Toyota Land Cruiser Jeeps for the purpose of assisting them to perform their legislative duties optimally and defend vigorously the interest of Rivers state.
The 16 Jeeps are confirmed to be Toyota land Cruiser worth hundreds of millions of naira meant for each of the 13 members of the Representatives and 3 senators from the state.

Authoritative sources confirmed that most members of the national assembly from the state quickly visited the state to take possession of the surprise gift from the governor. Among those who acknowledged receipt of their Jeeps is Mrs. Betty Arafi, leader Rivers State Caucus of the House of Representatives, Barrister Mpigi, Deputy Leader, Rivers State House of Representatives Caucus.
It was gathered that Governor Wike did not discriminate against opposition party members of the National Assembly from his state in giving out the Jeeps but rather appealed to all Rivers members in the legislative chambers to close ranks with the state government and work towards delivering the dividends of democracy to the state citizen.

Wike said: “Defend the interest of Rivers State wherever you are. These Jeeps are from the government of Rivers State which you are a part of. This is to aid you to carry out your official functions in Abuja”. Many Members of the national assembly from the state especially those ones who are not in the same party with the Governor were said to be taken aback with the surprise gift as they were not expecting such a show of magnanimity from the governor.
The beneficiaries have all expressed appreciation to the governor for the wonderful gift while assuring him of their steadfast support in respect of Rivers state issues in the National Assembly.

Meanwhile, the gift of such expensive Jeeps said to be worth over 400 million naira has continued to attract mixed reactions from the residents of Rivers State as most people who commented on the news condemned the Government action as callous and mindless in the light of the fact that the state government is owing retired civil servants their pensions and gratuities for over 3 years.
Other residents in the state wondered why scarce resources of the state should be spent on federal legislators who have already been given cars by the national assembly. Most worrisome is that such outlandish gift is coming at a time the state is facing an economic meltdown owing to the recession which hit Nigeria recently.
