Behold the National Identity Card

The National Identity Management Commission has revealed that the Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the mandatory use of the national identity number as from the 1st of January 2019.

The commission made the revelation in a statement issued by The Head Corporate Communications, Mr Love day Ogbonna.

A follow-up explanation was added by the Director General/CEO of the agency Aliyu Aziz who expressed hope that the much anticipated enforced use of the National ID number in all transactions political, business, educational etc. will take effect at last.

Aziz while justifying the use of the national identity number stressed that it was the necessary foundation for the government to plan and execute policies, programs and projects in agriculture, energy, transport and human capital development.

The statement read “The Federal Executive Council has approved the immediate commencement of the implementation of a strategic roadmap for Digital Identity Ecosystem in Nigeria at its meeting held on Wednesday, September 12th 2018 and chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR”

“This FEC approval of the Identity Ecosystem will bring into full force the implementation of the provisions of the NIMC Act 23, 2007. This includes the enforcement of the mandatory use of the National Identity Number by January 1, 2019, and the application of appropriate sanctions and penalties on defaulters as provided under section 28 of the NIMC act and regulations.

“The Identity Ecosystems is an Omnibus strategy for the government to meet the critical needs of the citizenry in areas such as food, energy, security, transport and human capital development but more critically developing a more digital economy.

Explaining the full impact of the commencement the NIMC D G notifies all agencies of government as well as private sector who are directly or indirectly in the business of data capture and service provision requiring identifications of persons that the guidelines, processes and procedures for licensing public and private sector organization will be published soon.

The National Identity Management commission was established to among other things to establish, manage, and operate the National Identity Management system. Its vision is to provide a single version of the truth or unique identity for every citizen (Identity Assurance).

It is also mandated to foster the orderly development of an identity sector in Nigeria through the components of card personalization, issuance of the smart card, database development and maintenance, Identity registration enrolment, NIN Generation as Authentication and Verification mode.
