YOUTH SKILLS ACQUISITION PROJECT

The federal government of Nigeria has concluded arrangements to train over 730 Niger Delta youths in various skill acquisition programmes this year. This is coming as the Nigerian government intensifies effort to stop incessant agitations and militancy in the region.

The training is also part of the government agenda to increase the human capital development in the country as well as evolve a trained and functional labour force in the country.

The Niger Delta Affairs Minister Usani Ugeru Usani made the revelations in Ibadan while attending the graduation ceremony of 25 Niger Delta youths that graduated at the Siegener Sabithos Nigeria Limited empowerment training programme of the Federal Ministry of Niger Delta at the University of Ibadan.

The Director of Economic Empowerment Federal Ministry of Niger Delta Alhaji Ibrahim Akanya who represented the Minister reiterated the resolve of the Buhari administration to develop the region through the development of human capital.

According to him “This empowerment is not only a means of fast-tracking development but also to actualize the President’s human capital development programmes”.

“President Buhari believes that in addition to infrastructure, human capital development is very vital and essential for a nation. Most of the crises we have in Nigeria today are as a result of neglect of human capital development”.

The issue of human capital development is not new as we have it before but it has been energized by the present administration of Buhari. He put a lot of impetus fund into it and actually organize it. As I said before, the Ministry of Niger Delta alone will be training about 730 youths under the 2017 budget alone.

About 180 youths are graduating today in Calabar. By next Wednesday about 90 youths will be graduating still from Calabar axis again. Again on next Monday about 205 women and youths will be commencing another training here in Ibadan at the Polytechnic Ibadan. Also in Imo State about 105 youths equally graduated from the same programme last week.

The essence of the programme is that the restiveness we have in the Niger Delta and the North East is nothing other than neglect of human capital. If we have to arrest this situation we have to develop human being along that line” stated Uguru
