Federal High Court, Lagos
“Wonders will never end “goes the popular adage especially in the modern world of today where there is hardly any shame or remorse for obvious crime or sin committed against the society. This belief is getting a good reference from the latest antics and tactics of the disgraced Nigerian billionaire Kidnapper, Mr. Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike a.k.a Evans.
Information reaching the public is that the hardened criminal who used to kidnap, tortured and imprisoned his victims for up to 6 months until they pay very high ransom is crying foul and seeking justice from the Nigerian courts for illegal detention because of his detention by the police for just three weeks.
Evans, the suspected kidnapper on Thursday the 28th of June 2017 approached a Federal High Court in Lagos seeking N300 million as compensation for illegal detention and unconstitutional media trial. In the suit against the Nigeria Police Force and three others the suspected criminal is seeking the enforcement of his fundamental human right to fair hearing and liberty, he is seeking a declaration that his parade on June 11th before journalists in Lagos, at the Lagos police command headquarters in Ikeja without any court order is unconstitutional and illegal .
Evans Vs Police
Evans in the suit marked FHC/L/CS/1012/2017 is also consequently seeking an order compelling the respondents to immediately arraign him before a law court or release him forthwith from custody. Evans further is seeking also an order compelling the respondents to jointly and severally pay him the sum of N300 million as exemplary damages for illegal detention and harm caused his person as a result of media trial.
He is also seeking an order of perpetual injunction restraining the respondents from further arresting, detaining, harassing, investigating, or inviting him in relation to the facts of the case. Evans is suing the Inspector General of Police, Lagos State Police Commissioner, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad and the Lagos State Police Command.
Evans father, Mr. Stephen Onwuamadike supported the case by deposing to a 27 paragraph affidavit alleging among many things that himself and other family members have been denied access to him whereas media outfits have been granted unfettered access to him.
Meanwhile, the Police while reacting to the suit described it as an effort in futility as the police had applied and secured a valid and subsisting court order from an Abuja high court authorizing them to hold Evans for three months until thorough investigations have been concluded on his matter.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Administration in the Lagos Command Dasuki Galandanci stated that the police must conclude a thorough investigation concerning Evans before arraigning him in court. He revealed that the ongoing investigation will cover many aspects of his crimes and many countries within his criminal network including Ghana, South Africa and other parts of Nigeria.
Mr. Galandanci further revealed that Evans prior to his arrest was in the police wanted list in Anambra, Edo, Abuja, Enugu as we’ll as Lagos States. “He, Evans has been operating as a criminal kidnnaper with a criminal gang for so many years. Some of his men have been arrested in Enugu and Lagos but there are many others out there. Therefore there is need for a painstaking investigation. He will definitely be charged to court once the investigations is concluded”
For Evans, what is good for the goose is good for the gander; he used to keep his abducted victims for months without pity and sympathy despite pleas and cries from relations. He is now also being held in custody by the police to account for his devilish, wicked and criminal actions. No court of law will save him now no matter the legal gymnastics. This is a strong message to many others out there.
