Flooded Niger Delta Community
The Minister of the Niger Delta Affairs Dr Usani Ugeru Usani has expressed worry over the deplorable environmental conditions in the region. He lamented the frightening condition in the region whereby communities are faced with serious environmental danger like floods with no reprieve or workable solution in sight.
Usani said it is this helpless situation that has informed his ministry decision to fashion out a work plan, an Environmental Policy Action in the region toward addressing the hydra monster.
The Minister made the revelation in a one day stakeholders’ validation workshop and launching of a draft document on Niger Delta Region Climate Change Programme and Action Plan. (NDRCCP-AP) organized by the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs in Calabar, capital of Cross River State last Thursday.

According to the Minister “the purpose of the programme is to streamline Environmental Policy Action in the Niger Delta which is traceable to the impact of environment discontents such as the flooding which is ravaging the riverine communities.
“It would also cover the prevalence of cancer-related ailments, the radioactive ailments, as well as the soot that is in the atmosphere especially in Rivers state.
The Minister insisted that stakeholders in the Niger Delta project must fashion out a credible solution to the environmental disasters confronting the region especially the issue of floods submerging several communities.

He stressed the need to make people aware of the dangerous effect of climate change which is indirectly causing environmental disasters in the region.
According to him “ There is need to carry out sensitization on climate change so that people will know the effect of what they go through and also that investors and economic moguls would discontinue harping on our ignorance while they make economic fortunes.
