Edo State Government has created a database to registered all unemployed youths in the State towards getting them gainful employment. To realize this objective, the Government led by Governor Godwin Obaseki has entered into partnership and collaboration with the Nigeria Institute of Welding to establish a fabrication village in the state.
It is hoped that when established and operational the fabrication village will absorb over 5,000 unemployed youths who would acquire training and expertise in various types of welding works as well as fabrication of equipment, plants, and machinery as well as oil tools.
Governor Obaseki while receiving a delegation from the Nigerian Institute of welding in Benin City, the Edo State capital pledged to work together with it to achieve his vision of transforming Edo state into a technology hub in the country.
He promised to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Institute as soon as possible to concretize their relationship. He also disclosed that the state will make available a suitable land and location equip with all necessary facilities for the siting of the welding village.
According to Governor Obaseki ”We are positioning our state and Nigerian Institute of welding is a key plank for this revolution. Edo will like to go into a memorandum of Understanding with the institute on how to accomplish a fabrication village. We have registered about 40,000 unemployed youths in our database for employment in the State”.
Revealing how the programme will operate the Governor said it is only those who are interested in welding that will be selected and train. After the training, they will be encouraged to set up their welding workshops in the village as well as export their expertise to other parts of Nigeria and abroad.
The Leader of the Nigerian Institute of welding Delegation, Dr. Solomon Edeberi lauded the efforts of the governor in repositioning the state towards self-reliance in technological services. He assured the governor of the institute commitment to collaborate with Edo State towards setting up a welding yard and in supporting its industrialization programme. Dr. Edebiri further disclosed the institute’s desire to build its National Centre of Excellence for Welding Engineering also in Edo State.
Establishing a welding and fabrication village in Edo State is a visionary plan of a well focused Governor. Nigeria desperately needs technological and industrial advancement. Both depends on iron and steel. Fabrication of iron and steel to form machinery and equipment is a step towards specialisation and technology know how.
The Governor should also encourage the teaching and practicing of iron and steel fabrications as well as welding works in secondary schools and if possible established specialised technical colleges that will focus on the development of not only iron and steel but other necessary materials like wood and plastics.
