Doctors in Edo State this Tuesday suspended work as they embark on a peaceful protest against the kidnap of the Chief Medical Director of the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Edo state Dr. Sylvanus Okogbenin.

The doctors numbering over 50 carried placards with many messages for the government as well as the security operatives in the state. They vowed not to return to work until the kidnapped medical director was released and also security was guaranteed for their work.

It would be recalled that  Dr.Okogbenin was abducted at Ramat Park in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area on Monday on his way to Benin from Abuja.

In the course of the kidnapping, the kidnappers had also killed two police officers attached to him while pedestrians were hit by stray bullets.

Branch Chairman of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Dr. Julian Ojebor, described the abduction of the CMD as a very sad development in the state.

He said the incident has demoralized all doctors in the state as their safety is no longer guaranteed.

He observed that the Benin expressway has now become a kidnappers den saying the kidnap of the CMD was one incident too many, adding that doctors would not resume work until the government provides adequate security on the Benin Expressway.

According to him, “This is one kidnapping too many. We had lost staff to kidnappers in 2013. We decided to shut down because we are now afraid to go to Agbor or Benin.

“The highway is no longer safe for us. We will not go to work until the highways are made safe and our CMD released.”

The doctors were joined by the Joint Health Workers Union during the peaceful protest.
