Female Dancers at the Calabar Carnival

The 14th edition of the popular Calabar Carnival dubbed the biggest street party in Africa ended on Friday with the Adult street carnival staged in major roads in the ancient town. Over 5 million visitors coming from all over the world are reported to have witnessed the event adjudged to be the most popular and largest tourist attraction in sub-Saharan Africa.

The Calabar carnival which was initiated since 2004 by the then governor, Donald Duke has seen its popularity soared and patronage increased over the years. It has also witnessed various innovations and structure which has made it dynamic and attractive to fun lovers and tourists alike.

This year’s festival added a lot of new attractions and sideshows that held most spectators spellbound and excited thus re-enforcing its status as Nigeria’s number one tourist destination. Bikers’ race, exotic cars display, street acrobatic dance and drama as well as many other attractions were on display during the three-day event.

Gov Ben Ayade Declaring the Carnival Open

While declaring the epoch event open, the state governor Professor, Ben Ayade revealed that the Carnival Calabar 2018 and its theme Africanism define the real Africa, its cultural heritage, and natural resources.

According to the governor, “Today Africanism as our theme goes beyond Africa. It talks about Africanistic. It talks about making Africa a big centre. Africa is such a big continent filled with beautiful people. Very diverse culture, and today we are here to show that truly Africa is a virgin continent and the western world knows it.

Continuing the governor stated “Civilization began in Africa, mining started in Africa, and Africa has a high knowledge and innovation. Today the Africa mindset movement and everything in Africa is here in Cross River State and therefore I used this platform to unveil Africa to the world.

Monstrous Bike on Display

The beauty pageant segment of the show tagged “Miss Africa Pageant” was hosted on Thursday and grace with personalities within and outside the country. At the end of the thrilling performance and presentations by various beauty queens representing the African continent, Miss Congo emerged the beauty queen and carted away many prizes and monetary gifts.

In this year’s carnival, like in the previous ones, it was a contest among the five participating bands made up of the Bayside Band, the Master Blaster Band, the Seagulls Band,   the Freedom Band and the Passion 4 Band.

Out of the 28 states in Nigeria invited for the show about 26 States honoured and participated in the Carnival. Also participants’ from the countries of Germany, Canada, Australia and others attended and added an international flavour to the 2018 edition of the Event.
