Benin Storm Water Multi-Billion Naira Project
Work on the Benin City Storm Water multi-billion naira projects is in progress and will soon be completed, assures the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki. Obaseki spoke through his Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability Mr Omuoa Longe Oni-Okpaku who led top government officials along with contractors to the site of the ongoing project at Uwelu Axis of the Benin Water Storm project in Benin City.
The commissioner while speaking during the inspection of the project re-emphasise the importance of the project not only to the immediate environs of Benin City but to Edo State as a whole. He declared that the water project was of paramount importance to the state government and its people hence the need to deliver a top quality work at the scheduled time.

According to Oni-Okpaku the project when completed will bring succour to the residents of Benin City, mitigate the impact of flooding as well as other environmental challenges facing the people of the city.
Said the commissioner, “the Uwelu east and the west stormwater master plan is about 70% completed, currently the drains along the power line are clean up. Proper concrete is used in constructing the drains to allow for proper flow of flood in the channels towards Ogba River. The project is still ongoing”

The Benin Water Storm project was actually started by the former governor of Edo state Adams Oshiomole even though it was part of the Benin Masterplan since Edo state was created.
The project estimated at over N150 Billion naira consisted of many components and parts and was divided into sections for easy financing and implementation. The sections of the multi-billion naira project include the flagship water storm project of Uwelu east and west water catchment de-flooding project which covers Adolor College, Uwelu, Teachers House and Uzebu area of Benin City.

Another segment of the stormwater project is the Airport road Storm Water Control and the Constain Isonoroh Storm Water De flooding. Others are the Upper Lawani and the Uselu 5 Junction Moat now known as Queen Esther Erediawa flood and erosion projects.
Most of the segments of the stormwater project have been completed by the previous government of Adams Oshiomhole. The present government of Governor Obaseki does not want to be seen as slacking in fulfilment of the party promises to make Benin City flood free zone.
Storm Water Project set to Arrest the Flood
Hence it has intensified its effort to complete the remaining part of the massive stormwater project interconnecting many deep channels, canals and underground receptacles across the city.
