 The obnoxious culture of witchcraft accusation and victimization in Akwa Ibom state has refused to go away despite the numerous interventions effort of successive governments to stamp out the scourge.

It is not surprising that another witchcraft stigma related death was reported to have occurred in Ikot Abasi Village in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government area of the state.

According to the state Commissioner of Police Mr. Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi, the two brothers namely Akaninyene and Ime Enyeokpon conspired together and murdered their brother accusing him of ruining their lives and causing their state of poverty by the use of witchcraft.

Rescued Children Accused of Witchcraft

Narrating the whole incident to the press, the state police boss stated that the deceased, the second son of the family had gone to the bush to check on his trap as he customarily does when he met his death at the hands of his two brothers.

According to the police ”the deceased one Friday Enyeokpon of Ikot Abasi Asutan village in Ibesikpo Asutan local government area of Akwa Ibom State had gone to the bush to check his traps. While still in the bush, the suspects Akaninyene Enyeokpon and Ime Enyeokpon emerged from their hideouts killed beheaded and buried the deceased head while leaving behind his lifeless body in the bush.

During interrogations, they confessed to the crime alleging that the deceased bewitched them and caused their misfortune. Also, that the deceased used his witchcraft to manipulate their destinies and cause them to be poor.

While assuring the public that the police are still undergoing an investigation into the matter, the police commissioner revealed that the head of the deceased, as well as the machetes used in the commission of the murder, has also been recovered from the suspects.

The police boss used the occasion to caution against wanton and careless branding of people as witches and wizards without valid and concrete proof as well as taking laws into one’s hand without following due process.

He warned that the laws will not sympathies with anyone who takes the life of another simply because he/she is suspected or accused of being a witch or wizard as in the present case.

However, the two suspects are currently under police detention with no option of bail pending their arraignment before the court of law.
