Akwa Ibom Police Boss, Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi

Ukanafun and Etim Ekpo Local government areas of Akwa Ibom state are the two black spots in an ordinarily peaceful and low crime state. From these two notorious areas emanate news of numerous atrocities committed against residents, visitors and investors alike.

Several cases of armed robbery, kidnapping for ransom, abduction, killings, assassinations, stealing, rape and arson have been reported in the areas and even most crimes in other parts of the state have been linked to these two areas of the state.

Recently it was reported that hoodlums from Etim Ekpo, one of the crime-infested area invaded Obong University situated in the local government and abducted two girls from the female hostel. A third girl who escapes from their custody did so with bullet wounds.

The police have now sprung into action to stop the criminals and their sponsors from continuing the mayhem prevalent in the crime enclave by identifying 59 key criminals and their sponsors whom they correctly tagged terrorists and have declared them wanted dead or alive.

In a press statement released on Sunday, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police Mr. Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi released the 59 names of the ringleaders and sponsors of the various criminal activities in the two local government areas and declared them wanted.

Among the recent crimes purported to have been committed by the accused wanted persons is the recent kidnapping of an official of the Independent Electoral Commission INEC last week in Aruk Ata 2 community.

The wanted terrorists are also linked to the killings of at least eight persons and are needed to answer questions in connection with this killings. The wanted persons were also accused of burning down eight houses and being linked to the abduction of two female students at Obong University.

The police revealed that several raids have been launched in the area with the aim of apprehending the culprits and have even rescued many kidnapped and abducted persons from their custody. According to the state police boss, part of the area hitherto abandoned by residents for fear of the hoodlums have started coming back to life as many residents are returning back.

Many more raids are being organized with joint task forces of Army and Navy against the terrorists and hopefully, the whole area affected by the activities of the assailants will be fully liberated and freed.

The police, however, disclose that difficult terrain within the Etim Ekpo, Ukanafun axis is hampering their efforts to rid the criminals completely from the area. Nevertheless, the Police Commissioner assures that effort would be intensified to bring all the accused persons declared wanted by the police to answer charges on their criminal activities.
