His Excellency Nnamdi Kanu
The United States government led by Mr. Donald Trump has disagreed with the Nigerian government concerning the status of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra IPOB. Despite lobby by the Nigerian government on the western countries to support them in condemning and classifying the separatist movement as terrorist, the western countries led by the United States have refused to do so.
Speaking on behalf of his home country, Russell Brooks of the American Embassy in Nigeria insisted that under the United States laws, IPOB does not qualify as a terrorist organization, therefore, the United States cannot classify it as one. Russell stated that though the United States is in favour of a peaceful resolution of the internal crisis in Nigeria, classifying IPOB as a terrorist group will worsen rather than help the situation.
Nnamdi Kanu of Biafra Republic
A terse statement issued by the embassy stated “The United States of America is strongly committed to Nigeria’s unity. Important political and economic issues affecting the Nigerian people such as the allocation of resources is worthwhile topics for respectful debate in a democracy within the context of unity. We encourage all Nigerians to support the de-escalation of tensions and peaceful resolution of grievances. The Indigenous People of Biafra is not a terrorist organization under the US laws”
The European Union had a while ago condemned in strong terms the callous and brutal suppression of the rights of the people of South East of Nigeria to demand a separate state of Biafra. While cautioning the Nigerian military against high-handedness and brutality against the Biafra people the president of the European Commission Mr. Jean Claude Junker had warned “It is the people rights to agitate and make demands from their government. Self-determination is a right enshrined in United Nations Charter. The people of Biafra have every right to request for a referendum”.
IPOD is Not a Terrorist Group by US Embassy
“The people of Biafra have been in this struggle for a while now, they have never killed nor shot a bullet instead they are the victims of attacks and murder. The entire EU, therefore, condemned the brutal attack on IPOB and its leadership under a pretentious disguise of a military exercise ‘Operation Python Dance”
The Nigerian military is warned to use democratic tenets in handling its citizens. The EU will not sit by and watched things go undemocratic in the largest economy in the West African region” warned Junker.
The leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu had through his lawyer Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor petitioned all the democratic institutions and countries in the world on the military invasion of the south-east of Nigeria accusing the Nigerian military of committing acts of intimidation, torture, arrest, abduction and killing of the defenseless civilian populace in the South East while calling on them to intervene. The letters were addressed to the countries of United States, Russia, Israel, United Kingdom and France as well as the President of the European Union and the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
It would be recalled that shortly after the invasion of the South Eastern part of Nigeria by the Nigerian Military against the defenseless people of Biafra, the Nigerian Military high command had labeled IPOB a terrorist organization. An army spokesman Major-General John Enenche stated that IPOB used cutlasses, stones, machetes and broken bottles to attack the military in Umauhia. IPOB has further been proscribed by the Nigerian federal government who accused it of carving a territory for itself out of Nigeria. Printing its own currency, and having a secret police force as well as extorting money from other Nigerians
The Nigerian Government was forced to go to court and obtained a suspicious order banning and proscribing IPOB as a terrorist organization after the Nigerian Senate President Bukola Saraki had faulted their declaration as illegal and unconstitutional.
IPOD Members Protesting Oppression by Nigerian Military
A lot of commentators and pundits have expressed shocked and disappointment with the Nigerian government classification of IPOB as a terrorist group. They, reason that it amount to double standard and favouritism to regard IPOB, an unarmed and defenseless group agitating for their legitimate right to self-rule as a terrorist organization when the Fulani Herdsmen who are the no 1 terrorist group in Nigeria armed with guns, machetes and involved in mass killing, maiming, raping and abduction of innocent farmers across the country are not regarded as terrorist. The question then is who is a terrorist between IPOB and murderous Fulani herdsmen.
